On behalf of the members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Galvez Chapter NSDAR, it is my honor to present to the Lafayette Museum this America 250 commemorative flag and a special volume recording the names of local patriots who served during the American Revolution. With me here today is Dawn Alexander, librarian of Galvez Chapter, who secured this book as a token of our appreciation for the history that you preserve here. I also want to acknowledge the members of this board who are also members of Galvez Chapter. As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, we are reminded that the story of our independence reaches far beyond the thirteen colonies. Many men from this region answered the call to liberty and served under the leadership of Bernardo de Gálvez, whose campaigns along the Gulf Coast helped secure the cause of American independence. It is especially meaningful that this presentation is made here today, because this museum was once the home of descendants of one of the very patriots who served the American cause. In that way, this house stands not only as a place that tells history, but as a place that once lived it. By placing this flag and this record of the names of those who served in the care of the Lafayette Museum, we hope future generations will discover the important role Louisiana and its people played in the founding of our nation. May this flag and these books serve as enduring reminders that the spirit of liberty lived here as well.
